Saki Matsumura “FORM-Turn”

PROFILE

Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1993. Completed a degree course at Kyoto University of Art and Design Graduate School (Painting Field) in 2017. Her paintings incorporate several layers to create a three-dimensional effect. They create a gap between the visual and the real, such as expressions that give the illusion of relationship between the earth and the drawing, and materials whereby unevenness is emphasized with spray paint. They make you realize the distortion of recognition.

STATEMENT

My paintings incorporate several layers to create a three-dimensional effect. They create a gap between the visual and the real, such as expressions that give the illusion of relationship between the earth and the drawing, and materials whereby unevenness is emphasized with spray paint. They make you realize the distortion of recognition. This world exists between various diverse relationships, in a sometimes-contradictory manner. Amidst this, each feels a different world. It is that viewpoint from which I create my art.

ABOUT MUSIC AND ART

When I paint, I sometimes feel like I have become god creating the heavens and the earth. I create worlds with my art supplies. The canvas is the earth and I create the mountains and the plains. Occasionally natural disasters occur. I often put on Susumu Hirasawa in the background while I work. I especially love “Niwashi King.” He is a gardener and yet he is king. I rake the flower beds in this vast world I have created in my painting. I am a gardener, and also a king. Blow abundant, O wind, within the cosmos of the human body! Work on, O gardener; rest not, O king: the bombastic melody makes one really feel the mystical energy of creation. This song floats dynamically between the macro and the micro, inspiring me to plant my own seeds in the garden of my work.
