ベイ・シュー自身のアルバム全曲解説を掲載しました。


● 2007年、NYジャズ界で活躍する歌姫は "アジアン・ビューティー" 。重慶出身で、現在ニューヨークで活動中の女性ヴォーカリスト=ベイ・シュー待望のセカンド・アルバム。
● 交換留学生としてアメリカに渡り、インディアナ大学で会計学を学びつつ、歌とピアノをレッスンに励んでいたという才媛。卒業後はニューヨークに移り、ジャズ界の本場に仲間入り。現在はマンハッタンのメディカル・センターのIT部門に勤務するかたわら、ライヴ活動を行っています。
● アルバム『ベイ・シュー』(UCCJ-2046)で好調なセールスを遂げたベイ・シュー。セカンド作となる今作では、松任谷由実さんからジェームス・モリソンまで、国境・時代を飛び越えた<永遠のラヴ・バラッズ>をピアノ・トリオとともにカヴァー。彼女の透明感溢れる歌声が、素敵なメロディーたちをより輝かせます。米ジャズ界でもっとも軽やかなタッチを誇る天才ピアニスト=サイラス・チェスナットら豪華なメンバーによるピアノ・トリオの演奏も注目です。

01) Ordinary People
Ordinary People is one of my favorite songs on the album. I like it much more than before the recording. I am glad that we put it as the first track on the album. John Legend, the original singer of the song has a very strong voice. He delivered the song very well. So I felt a lot of pressure to sing this song well.
But during the recording, we took a different path. We made it sound a bit more relaxed than the original, or prettier J .
The hardest part for me in the song is probably the high notes towards end of the song. The favorite part of the song would have to be the beginning of the song in terms of feeling, lyrics and melody.

Ordinary Peopleは、このアルバムの中の最もお気に入りの曲のひとつです。レコーディングの前よりもずっと好きになりました。このアルバムの最初の曲にして良かったとおもいます。もともとこの曲を歌ったJohn Legendは、とても強い声を持っていました。彼はこの曲をとてもうまく伝えていたと思います。だからこの曲をうまく歌うのはとてもプレッシャーがありました。
しかしレコーディング中、私たちは別の道を選びました。オリジナルより少しリラックスした、よりかわいいJサウンドにしたのです。
この曲でおそらく一番難しかったのは、曲の最後に向かう高音でしょう。一番好きなところは、フィーリング、歌詞、メロディから言って曲の最初のところです。
2) It ain't over till it's over
This is very challenging song for me to put my own spin around it. When I first heard Lenny’s Kravitz’s version, I just couldn’t hear my voice with the original track. I didn’t think it was a song to show my vocal strength.
But after working with Nori on this song, we changed the rhythm. At the day of the recording, this song is used to feature Herlin Riley. The drums sounded beautiful and I got into the feel. I hope I delivered it ok J.

これは、自分のサウンドにするのが難しい曲でした。最初にレニー・クラヴィッツのバージョンを聞いたとき、曲に自分の声が乗るのが想像できませんでした。これは私のボーカルの力が表すことができる曲ではないと思っていました。
しかしノリとこの曲を取り組んで、リズムを変えることにしました。レコーディング当日、この曲は、Herlin Rileyをフィーチャーするのに使われました。ドラムがとても美しく響き、私は感情に入り込みました。うまく伝わるといいと思います。
3) Melody
Melody has been my favorite Chinese song for a long time. The original singer and he also wrote the music, David Tao is one of my most loved artists. Melody just came out a couple of years ago, I am not sure if Nori is ok with doing something so popular, especially a popular Chinese song. But once he heard it, he felt the same way as me.
I love the original too much so I want to leave it in its form. We changed the speed, and that pretty much changed the whole feeling. It became more up beat and happier.
It was challenging for the musicians to record this one because it was the first one to do and they never heard it before. But I am sure the song gave them a whole new experience as how it gave to the audience.

Melodyは中国の歌で、ずっと私の大好きな曲でした。オリジナルは、作曲者でもあるDavid Taoが歌っています。彼は私の大好きなアーティストです。Melodyは何年か前の作品ですが、ノリがこんなに有名な、特に有名な中国の歌を扱うかどうか心配でした。しかし彼は一度聞いて、私と同じように感じてくれました。
オリジナルがあまりに好きなので、そのままの形をとどめたいと思っていました。でもスピードを変えたら、全体の感じもほとんど変わって、もっとアップビートでハッピーな曲になりました。
ミュージシャンたちにとって、この曲をレコーディングするのは難しいことでした。レコーディングの最初にやったため、それと彼らはこの曲を聞いたことがなかったからです。しかしこの曲は、オーディエンス同様、ミュージシャンたちにもまったく新しい経験になっただろうと、確信しています。
4) I love you, Porgy
The first time I heard this song by Billie Holiday. I immediately fell in love with it. The melody is so beautiful and so deep. The lyrics delivered such a beautiful story. The song is probably the one that allowed me to express my feeling, personality the most. I love it and appreciate this opportunity to sing it.
It reminded me that I really love Jazz, and there is a reason why I started in Jazz.

最初にこの曲を聞いたのは、ビリー・ホリデイがうたったものでした。すぐに大好きになりました。メロディはとても美しく深く、歌詞は非常に美しい物語を伝えます。この曲は、個人的におそらく一番私の感情を表現させてくれるものです。大好きな曲なので、歌う機会を得たことに感謝します。この曲は、私が本当にジャズが好きだということ、ジャズを始めた理由を思い出させてくれます。
5) A Happy New Year

This is introduced by Nori. I think it is his personal favorite. I know this song has been popular in Japan for a long time. Again, I am very happy to have the opportunity and the trust in me from Nori.
The lyrics are very sweet. And I want to portray that very sweet, but a bit sad type of feeling.
The Japanese part was very exciting and interesting to do. This is my first time singing in Japanese. Since I don’t speak Japanese, I want to focus more on the sound of the words, and integrate that with the music, the feeling. The challenging part was for me to make it sound natural, tasteful. I tried and I hope you will like what I did.

この曲はノリが教えてくれました。この曲が日本で長い間人気があることは知っています。この曲も歌う機会を得てとても幸せです。ノリが私を信頼してくれたこともうれしかったです。
歌詞がとてもすてきなので、この甘いけどちょっと悲しい感情を表現したいと思いました。
日本語のパートを歌うのは、とてもエキサイティングで面白かったです。日本語で歌うのは初めてでした。日本語は話せないので、言葉の響き、音楽と感情との統一感に重点的に取り組みました。自然に、上品に響くようにするのは、私にとって難しかったです。私と同じくらいあなたも気に入ってもらえるといいのですが。
6) Clare
Clare was like “It ain’t over till it’s over”. It was a very hard song for me to hear my voice in. The vocal range was very big too. Since I didn’t know this song before this recording, I had to listen to the original for a lot of times to learn it. But at the time of the recording, I had to try to forget it and do it in my style.
Nori didn’t want me to be close to the original in terms of the vocal sound at all. He said “just be yourself, be a strong, tough girl from new Orleans”. So that’s how we did the song.
The favorite part for me to sing would be the ending actually, where it goes “I hear them making love”. I want to sing that phrase over and over in a different way…J

Clareは、 "It ain't over till it's over"と同様、自分の声で歌うのが想像できない曲でした。音域もとても広いんです。レコーディング前までこの曲を知らなかったので、覚えるまでオリジナルを何度も聞きなおさなくてはいけませんでした。でもレコーディングのときは、そのことは忘れて、自分のスタイルでやろうと思いました。
ノリは、ボーカル・サウンドに関しては、オリジナルと似た感じに歌ってほしくないようでした。彼は「自分らしく、強く、タフなニューオリンズの女の子になれ」と言いました。この曲はそういう風に作られたものです。
私の一番好きなところは、実はエンディングの"I hear them making love"というところです。このフレーズをいろんな風に何度も歌いたいです…
7) You're Beautiful
This one is very popular, hahaha. I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to do something that’s released so closely and so popular. But we are all hoping for a new adventure and experience.
The more challenging part is to sing the lyrics well and make the audience get into what I am singing. The song is from a boy to a girl so it was hard for me to make it totally my story.
Nori wanted to make it some what Gospel type of feeling. Aretha Franklin was the artist he asked me to get inspirations from for this song.

この曲はとても人気があります、ハハハ。こんなに最近の、しかも有名な曲をやるのがいいアイデアなのか自信がありませんでしたが、私たちみんな、新しい冒険と経験を求めていたのです。
もっと難しかったのは、歌詞をうまく歌うことと、私が歌っていることをオーディエンスに感じてもらえるようにすることでした。男の子から女の子へ歌っている歌なので、完全に自分の物語にするのは難しかったです。
ノリは、ゴスペル風にしたいと思っていました。アレサ・フランクリンからインスピレーションを得るように、私に言いました。
8) Love me tender
This is my favorite one to sing because it’s so sweet, so simple. I just need to focus on the feeling, the story telling 100% without worrying too much about the vocal techniques.
I want the listeners to feel like they are back in the 40, 50s when they hear it. I just want to do it without trying, without pushing and let my true self come out.
Cyrus played beautifully on this tune. I really appreciate his notes.

これはとても甘くてとてもシンプルなので、大好きです。感情に集中し、ボーカル・テクニックはあまり気にせず、物語を100%伝えることに集中しました。
40〜50年代にこの曲を聞いていると感じてほしいと思います。がんばりすぎたり、押しを強くせずに、本当の自分自身を出せるようにしたいと思いました。
サイラスはこの曲でとても美しい演奏をしています。彼の音に本当に感謝しています。
9) You Give me Something

Again, a guy made this song very popular. And I want people to hear how it's like when a girl sings it in a more relaxed, sweet way.
The lyrics are full of meanings and tell a very full, good story too. So all I had to do is to envision what the lyrics are saying and just tell the story.
Even the vocal range is not so big but the melody goes up and down a lot so it needs a lot of concentration on the pitch, but I still want to make it sound like I wasn't trying too hard J

この曲を書いた人もとても有名です。この曲を女の子が、もっとリラックスして甘く歌ったらどうなるか、聞いてもらいたいと思います。
歌詞は深い意味があり、とてもいい話を伝えています。なので、私がすべきことは、その歌詞を心に描き、物語を伝えるだけでした。
音域はそれほど広くないんですが、メロディがたくさん上下するので、ピッチに集中する必要がありました。でもがんばりすぎているように聴こないようにしました。
10) Introduction to A Happy New Year
Cyrus played a very long and beautiful introduction for this song, and we recorded and don't want to throw it away. Even it's an unplanned track on this album. But putting it at number 10 on the track tells the story of our album very well.
The album itself feels like a complete love story. "Ordinary People" talks about how in the beginning of a relationship, we should take it slow. Then "A happy new year" might be the peak, celebrating new years with our loved ones. Then "Introduction to A happy new Year" makes us go back to something that was once there before, bought us back to some good memories. Finally from this song to "Time after Time", musically it is a very good switch. From the story telling, it feels like after thinking back, lovers still stay together, even they experience all the up and downs.

サイラスは、この曲のとても長くて美しいイントロダクションを演奏したので、録音したものを捨ててしまいたくありませんでした。アルバムに予定された曲ではありませんでしたが、この曲を10曲目にしたところが、私たちのアルバムの物語をよく表していると思います。
アルバムそのものが、1つのラブ・ストーリーのように感じられます。"Ordinary People"は関係の始まり、急ぎすぎてはいけないことについて。そして"A Happy New Year"はおそらくピークで、愛する人と新年を祝う。そして"Introduction to A Happy New Year"は過去にそこにあったものに立ち返ること、いい思い出を思い出すこと。最後にこの曲から"Time after Time"へ、音楽的にはとてもいい切り替えだと思います。物語としては、恋人たちが浮き沈みを経験した後に、思い返して、一緒にいることを選ぶ感じです。
11) Time after Time
Again, this is a legendary song with beautiful lyrics, melody. This song actually shows my vocal quality very well. And fits into the story of our album very well.

これも伝説的な、美しい歌詞とメロディを持つ曲です。この曲は実は私のボーカルの特質をよく表していると思います。そして私たちのアルバムの物語にもよく合っていると思います。
最後に：みんながこのアルバムを楽しんでくれるといいと思います。そして私がここで言ったことで、さらにアルバムが楽しめるようになるといいと思います。私とノリから説明することで、それぞれの曲の本当の意味が理解できると思います。
